The name photovoltaic consists of the following components:

"volta" named after the pioneer of electricity Alesandro Volta

The term photovoltaic means the transformation of sun energy into electric energy by means of semi conductors (solar cells). In solar cells, mostly made of silicium positive and negative load carriers are get free (photo effect) by adding light. Runs direct current is produced.

In order to transform the DC into usable AC a inverter is needed.

This technology was used already in 1958 to supply satellits with energy.

In order to be independent of fossil energies now solar modules are sold worldwide.

If all follow - up costs of gaining fossil energy were added to the price for energy, solar energy would be more lucrative already nowadays.

Follow - up costs include costs for health and the environment as well as costs for millitary protection of oil reserves.

There has been no war yet for the energy source "sun".
